#ThrowbackThursday

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant."                         -Robert Louis Stevenson

Hello everyone,

Whenever I have a live performance, I am often reflective of how far I have come. My throwback picture was taken nearly 10 years ago as I was planning for the release of my first CD "Breath of Fresh Air".  It is amazing to me that a picture or song can bring back such a flood of memories, thoughts and emotions.

Seeds that were planted then continue to grow deep roots and reach upward to bear fruit even today.

Let's continue to plant and water my friends, the increase will come.

Ciao!

Buddy Guy: Happy Birthday Guitar Extraordinaire - Born 7/30/1936

I've never missed a gig yet.  Music makes people happy, and that's why I go on doing it.  I like to see everybody smile.    --Buddy Guy

Hi Everyone,

Please joining me in singing Happy Birthday to the innovative, inspirational and trailblazing George "Buddy" Guy.  Born on July 30, 1936 Buddy is a Legendary blues guitarist and singer who has influenced the careers of many amazing guitarists including: Jimi HendrixEric ClaptonJimmy PageJeff BeckStevie Ray VaughanKeith Richards, and John Mayer.

As a musician growing up in the Midwest, for me the name Buddy Guy is synonymous with Chicago blues and takes me back to family parties with my parents, aunts and uncles playing Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy chasing us children out of the basement saying "y'all don't know nothing about this - this is grown folks music".

Even though Buddy turns 81 today you can see him live on tour through the end of the year.

See Buddy playing Louisiana Blues in my hometown of Milwaukee.

Happy Birthday Buddy and thank you for your fine musicianship!

Friday Feeling - New music edition

Hello Everyone!

I am so excited to write this post today.  As you may know, I am releasing new music in August and today my Friday feeling is my brand new song Superman.

Superman is a song that I wrote for my father Vernon, the song “Superman” brings to light the inevitable circumstances of aging parents and how this affects those dearest to us.

April 2017 - Family and friend, celebrating Dad's 70th Birthday

April 2017 - Family and friend, celebrating Dad's 70th Birthday

Since this is happening in my life now, I had to write a song about it. My goal was to deliver it in a lighthearted way that translates the sense of the hope and everlasting love that I have for my Dad even though this is a challenging time.

Music heals!  Please take care and take time for those you love.

Happy Birthday Adele!

Hello Everyone,

On May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, London, England - Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born.  At 29 years old and 11 years in the industry, Adele is a Superstar with 15 Grammy's,  three Guinness World Records, and has been named the UK's richest female musician ever.

And with all of that, when you see her in interviews and in concert (should you be so lucky) she is real, funny, quick witted and down to earth.  I am inspired by the realness, authenticity and compassion in her songs and admire her "take me as I am" spirit.   There is a great article by Mic Network Inc. entitled "The Secret to Adele's Success: She Does What No Other Pop Star Does".

See her Live at Church Studios singing When We Were Young.

Happy 29 Adele!  I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

With all due R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Aretha Franklin will put down her microphone after 50 Years

Being a singer is a natural gift. It means I'm using to the highest degree possible the gift that God gave me to use. I'm happy with that. --Aretha Franklin

Hello everyone,

At the age of 74, Aretha Franklin - the Queen of Soul has announced her retirement.  In her amazing career, Ms. Franklin has a total of 112 charted singles on Billboard, has garnered 18 Grammy's and was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In my life, there was never a time with out the music of Aretha Franklin. In our home, her music was always present along with Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Commodores.  In my music career, her music, faith and conviction has been an encouragement and inspiration.

To finish her spectacular career, Ms. Franklin will collaborate with Stevie Wonder to do a CD paying tribute to Detroit.  The writers from MSN music has written a great article that highlights this new work.

Thank you Queen Aretha, we look forward to the new CD and wish you a restful retirement!

How do you engage the Holiday season?

Hello everyone,

How do you engage the Holiday season? Growing up in a family moved by music, I knew it was Christmas time when my mother started to play the Temptations Christmas Card Album.  There was no denying the smooth sounds of: Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams oh yes the holiday spirit was in full swing!  Tree trimming, baking cookies and time with family was just around the corner.

In keeping with tradition, this year, I kicked off the holiday with the Temptation's Christmas Album  (of course) but had the opportunity to give back in some other ways as well:

As 2016 comes to an end, please take a moment to share your talent, love and time with someone. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa!

Ciao!

Drummer Extraordinaire James Gadson is Playing on My Upcoming Album

Hello everyone,

Recently, I had the opportunity to record with drummer, producer, singer, and songwriter James Gadson. Born in Kansas City Missouri in 1939, Mr. Gadson, is one of Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 100 drummers of all time and has blessed over 300 gold recordings from myriad of artists such as Bill Withers, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, Rolls Royce, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, D'Angelo and Norah Jones.

To work with him is to be in the company of R&B and Funk royalty.

As an emerging artist, it was fantastic to listen to Mr. Gadson share about how he "happened" into drumming, his passion for singing, love for his family, and laugh as he reminisced with Mike Nash (Rose Royce) and Leanard Jackson (Lakeside) about how it was to work in sessions with the many artists who are now music legends.

I am honored to have worked with such a kind, humble, and hardworking gentleman and I can't wait to share the fruits of our labor.

Ciao!
