If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward. -- Martin Luther King Jr.
Hello everyone and Happy New Year!
Nearly 50 years after his death, the legacy of Dr. King lives on. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an American federal holiday, happening the nearest Monday to King's birthday on January 15th.
The call for the holiday is for people to take time to remember, speak out, care about and serve others.
This year it was my pleasure to lead a group of approximately 30 people to serve at the Thomas House Family Shelter. Our tasks consisted of building bike racks, assembling bicycles and distributing clothing to the people who live in an underserved area of Garden Grove, California. The mission of Thomas House is to provide a safe, supportive environment and the resources necessary for homeless families with children to remain together while empowering them to become independent and self-sufficient.
In reviewing ways that others were celebrating and serving, it brought a smile to my face to see the granddaughter of Dr. King (Yolanda Renee King) leading a cheer at the National Monument today.
