Happy Birthday Adele!

Hello Everyone,

On May 5, 1988 in Tottenham, London, England - Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born.  At 29 years old and 11 years in the industry, Adele is a Superstar with 15 Grammy's,  three Guinness World Records, and has been named the UK's richest female musician ever.

And with all of that, when you see her in interviews and in concert (should you be so lucky) she is real, funny, quick witted and down to earth.  I am inspired by the realness, authenticity and compassion in her songs and admire her "take me as I am" spirit.   There is a great article by Mic Network Inc. entitled "The Secret to Adele's Success: She Does What No Other Pop Star Does".

See her Live at Church Studios singing When We Were Young.

Happy 29 Adele!  I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Ciao!

Stevie Wonder: "Songs in the Key of Life" celebrates 40th Anniversary

"Just because a man lacks the use of his eyes doesn't mean he lacks vision…" Stevie Wonder

Hello everyone,

To know me, is to know that music & inspiration from Stevie Wonder is a large part of the reason that I sing today.

Although released 40 years ago last month, the message and music of Stevie Wonder's seminal album Songs in the Key of Life  still resonates today.

Although released 40 years ago last month, the message and music of Stevie Wonder's seminal album Songs in the Key of Life still resonates today.

As a child, I spent many Saturday afternoons with my father, sitting in front of our large picture window listening to and discussing diverse music. One day while listening to the Songs in the Key of Life album by Stevie Wonder my life was changed. The contents of the song Ngiculela/Es Una Historia/I Am Singing  brought me to tears as a child and made me want to have such an effect on people. From that moment on, I have been compelled to sing songs and make music that will positively touch the lives of others.

I am not sure if it was the song's rich texture, the lyrics, the integration of different languages or the spirit of unity in which it was conceived but I was, and still am, hooked:

  • In September 1976, the Songs in the Key of Life album was released by Motown Records.
  • In October 1976, the album rose to number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 82 weeks.
  • In 1977, the album won two Grammy awards: album of the year, and best male pop vocal performance.
  • In 2002, Songs in the Key of Life was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame  and in 2005, into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry

In 2014, I had the pleasure of attending the Songs in the Key of Life Tour at the Great Western Forum and the All-Star Grammy salute in 2015—both were WONDERful!

Take a moment to celebrate Songs in the Key of Life and share your favorite song from the album.

Hello everyone!

In October 1956, the Verve label released a studio album by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, entitled “Ella and Louis”.  This work consists of 11 ballads and is accompanied by the Oscar Peterson Quartet.

ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG Ella and Louis LP (1956 UK Mono Verve/HMV)

On November 22, 2015, this album joined the Grammy Hall of Fame.

With Ella being one of my favorite singers, I am excited to share and celebrate this milestone and as a tribute to the duo, here is my version of Moonlight In Vermont, enjoy!

Hey Everyone

Tonight will be the first rehearsal that I have with the choir that will sing on my second album and
I am excited, humbled and overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude.

Music has always been an emotional, physical, and spiritual center for me and it is always playing in my head. So with every emotion, antic, or situation that occurs, I always find a song that puts me into the right frame of mind. Today that song is, It's What I Do.

It's What I Do is a sweet, lyric-driven song written from God's perspective to us. It's a reminder to stop wondering, stop second-guessing, stop doubting, just be still and leave room for God to "do what he does".

In 2011, this song won jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum his first Grammy award for best Gospel Song. Written by Kirk Whalum and longtime record producer Jerry Peters (The Sylvers, Earth, Wind and Fire) with lead vocals from Lalah Hathaway.
