October 11, 2017 - International Day of the Girl
“Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights”
-United Nations Resolution 66/170
Wednesday, October 11 is International Day of the Girl a day created in 2012 by the United Nations to highlight the challenges girls face around the world.
The theme for 2017 - "EmPOWER Girls: before, during and after emergencies"
To raise awareness about the challenges that girls face, the UN’s Global Goals project created a video using Beyonce’s song "Freedom". The video, part of their #FreedomForGirls initiative, depicts young girls dancing and lip syncing the lyrics of the song and concludes with shocking facts about the obstacles girls face.
This day is marked by worldwide events sponsored by nonprofits, humanitarian groups and the government.
In my new single entitled "Time to Get Away" I address the my journey and victory of surviving rape and encourage all to be EmPOWERed.
